If it weren’t for bad luck

I remember watching Hee Haw with my parents when I was growing up.  Not high brow entertainment, but we had a lot of laughs.   There’s a line from one of their songs that has stuck in my mind for years: “if it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.”

Based on what I see and hear on the news I might rephrase it “If it weren’t for bad news, there’d be no news at all.”  And there are lots of lists in the news.  Back then, Mississippi was at the bottom of a lot of the lists and people would say “thank goodness for Mississippi.”  Things have changed a bit and I bet that in Mississippi, there are people saying “thank goodness for Nevada.”

I live in Nevada and while many of the statistics are true, there are also a lot of good things that don’t normally make the news.  One of these is manufacturing.  If you listen to the news you would think that nothing is made in America anymore.  But there are some incredible things made in northern Nevada including

Surfboards – AVISO
Fire hydrants – American AVK
Centrifuges – CINC Industries
Microchip Testing Equipment – Micro Manipulator
Turbine parts – Chromalloy
Beer – Buckbean Brewery
Lots of parts that go into other products

The list goes on and on.

I don’t really believe in luck.  I believe that serendipity favors the prepared.  To a large degree you make your own luck.  It’s about taking action to make things better.

So I’m a Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA) board member and support economic development.   The Airport Authority has graciously allowed NNDA to use some space at the Reno Tahoe International Airport for a number of months starting in January to showcase local manufacturers.   I have volunteered to lead the effort.  (Guess what else I’m doing over the holidays besides wrapping presents, cooking, eating, and toasting in the New Year.)

So, if you would like to find out more about manufacturing in northern Nevada, stop by the exhibit in starting in mid to late January – it’s between the bronze skier statue and baggage claim with the theme “Made in Northern Nevada, Who Knew?”  There’s way too much to show everything at one time, so we will be rotating the exhibits.  If you are a northern Nevada manufacturer or want to nominate someone to be included, please let me know.
