At Weyerhaeuser, one of the world’s largest forest products companies, customer complaints were over the top in the fine paper operation. Customers were frustrated with what they perceived as shipment delays and complaints were rampant.

The Distribution Solution

We assembled a team of manufacturing, warehouse, and salespeople to investigate the problem. In a short period of time we realized that the use of two warehouses, one on-site, and one off-site, was creating the problem. 

Inventory in both systems was visible to the customers, but only the on-site warehouse was shipping the same day. The longer shipment process out of the Midwest caused the customer perception of shipment delays. After examining the costs and return on investment, we chose to expand the on-site warehouse so that we could achieve the same-day shipments that our customers demanded.
